Rehabilitate the water quality of small tanks and reservoirs in rural Sri Lanka. Improving water quality in these ponds and tanks will reduce disease and increase agricultural productivity for small farmers that use these reservoirs. These small tanks are often the only water source for villagers in the North and East of Sri Lanka.
Building floating wetlands in tanks and reservoirs. The growth of aquatic plants will recover nutrients and heavy metals from contaminated lakes and ponds, improving the water quality in rural tanks and reservoirs. This, in turn, will provide better drink water for villagers in the dry zones of Sri Lanka.
That polluted ponds and lakes can be improved with minimal investment by the use of floating island technology.
That universities and government ministries will cooperate in this project.
Developing an economical management plan to determine the costs and benefits of using floating islands to improve the water quality of polluted tanks and reservoirs used for drinking water and irrigation in Sri Lanka.
