Increasing fish production without additional operational capital.

The Problem

With every Kilo Watt of electricity you put into aeration of fish ponds you produce 500 Kg additional fish in an aquaculture pond. Semi-intensive production of fresh water fish is done in fertilized green water ponds where the algae forms part of the feed bringing down the input cost. Dense algae consumes oxygen at night inhibiting fish growth.

Our Proposal

Aeration with on farm hydroelectricity of the pond water at night allows one to culture dense algae to serve as fish feed, increasing the growth of the fish without expensive formulated feed input.

We Assume that...

1. We can produce sufficient quantities of electricity. 2. Large volumes of slow flowing water could be converted in to usable electricity. 3. Simple robust technology easy to maintain can work well.

Constraints to Overcome

Producing sufficient quantities of electricity (> 50 Kw) in a slow flowing river close to the sea where the flow is affected by tidal changes. The average daily change in the level of the river is 500mm. During the rainy season the level rises with up to 1 meter for extended periods. Huge volumes of water flow slow in this river at the edge of our fish farm.

Current Work

Generate electricity in a slow flowing river in rural Mozambique suitable for food production.

Current Needs

We need funding for purchasing a suitable alternator and system to increase, monitor and manage the speed of the rotation of the shaft resulting from our water wheel.
