A Greater Mass

The Problem

Issues like climate change, production of plastic waste and use of fossil fuels can seem like huge unclimbable mountains to an individual person - and in some ways they are! But, there are loads of small things we can all do that collectively have a massive impact. It's hard to find these solutions, or to even know where to begin in tackling these huge issues. Lack of awareness, or drive, or education is a definite issue here. I've spent many years trying to find environmental alternatives in every day life; from changing diet to changing phone providers. I've come up with the idea of building an app to provide these environmental small steps that can be taken at an individual level; providing all the referenced reasons as to why the actions are important, and why they work.

Our Proposal

A Greater Mass is an app that aims to provide direct actions that can be easily completed by the individual but which will collectively make large positive change. Actions range from replacing plastic bottles and disposable coffee cups in our lives with sustainable options, to considering environmental options for our mobile phones, and assessing the impact of investing our money in particular banks. A huge range of positive actions for a better world. The app will 'gamify' these issues, providing points, levels and achievements as actions are completed. It makes conservation and environmental action fun and rewarding.

We Assume that...

1. Many people are not taking individual action on conservation and human rights issues due to a lack of awareness of the actions that can be taken. A Greater Mass tackles this problem directly.

2. Acting on issues can have a psychological burden. We tackle this by providing guidance on science-based mental health practices in order to maintain motivation and avoid compassion fatigue.

Constraints to Overcome

Raising awareness of the current existing solutions and actions that can be immediately undertaken by the individual, in tackling global environmental issues

Current Work

Developing the initial soft release of the app, which will feature 10 actions. The tenth action will be to provide your own solution to an environmental problem. The ten actions are fully created. We will later roll out more actions with an aim of 52; one action a week for a year.
