The strength of a community comes from the diversity of people within it. On the Digital Makerspace, we're proud of our incredibly diverse community, a truly inter-disciplinary team to solve the stickiest conservation problems. Let's open that up and find out just how diverse we are!
In this thread, introduce yourself and your field, and let us know what you want to learn, and what kind of projects you want to be involved in.
Upvotes for the most far-flung disciplines! (Any interpretive dancers here?)
My name is Jake Hanft, and I work for Schmidt Marine. We provide funding to ocean conservation technologies - you can learn more about our work and the projects we've supported at Schmidtmarine.org. Happy to answer any questions!
Jake
I'm also an event producer and installation artist at Burning Man, work with OceanSOS, and project manager at a smart medical device startup. I am an autodidact, world traveler, maker, builder, burner, and dreamer. Possibly rabid.
Our unofficial motto is "Were saving the world, one steaming pile at a time!"
All of my work is about efficiency at the food energy water nexus, attacking the biggest/best bad examples first. That makes cows the target. When we solve food insecurity, we will do it right, and solve healthcare, the environment and the economy together. I have specialized knowledge in the anaerobic digestion and nutrient extraction fields, and have a life goal of building an applied sciences centre for sustainable agriculture. A data driven, mission focused living lab, with EVERYTHING sensored, and the information shared. I was blessed to spend a summer at XPRIZE as an Impact Designer, and for my next act, plan to win the (hopefully) upcoming Future of Food XPRIZE Competition. #AgInnovation
I also grow trees.
Also keen on recycling and renewable energy
I am now dedicated to providing value to companies by analysing trends, gathering information of interest and looking for new business opportunities in the sectors related to my knowledge and showing how technology can be an ally for the protection of the environment.
I am currently working in Environmental Impact of Renewable Energy, but I am very interested in Conservation and Restoration. I want to be part of the present transformation and I believe in interdisciplinary cooperation to achieve an ecological equilibrium.
I am passionate about our oceans and sail, scuba dive and surf.
Win a lot of hackathons, down to work with developers but the last few events have really drained me; getting to the point where its easier to just do everything myself.
Smarthome enthusiast, won Erie Hack last year (IoT water sensors), but my 'best' conservation idea is dealing with recycling, so I'll probably submit it (and a couple others, if multiple submissions are allowed).
This is Richard Burkhill, originally from the UK, currently living in Beijing. I created a brand called envisionBetter in 2015 to both raise awareness and be an ideas platform of how to make better - everything from the biological to technological. Hence I'm very excited to be introduced to a platform such as this where the goals appear very similar!
My background is a BA (Hons) in Computer Applications, 6 years of running an IT and development company, 7 years teaching Computing in Secondary schools and now S.T.E.A.M. & Primary Computing Leader in both the UK and China.
Across those years, I have been working to bridge the gap between conservation and technology as I strongly believe that technology holds keys to helping us fix what we've broken.
Mark Robert Henderson here. I live near Gloucester MA and am the organizer of Hack for the Sea. I work full time at CUAHSI and when I'm not doing that I'm trying to pull audio out of the ocean to do interesting computational things with. My background is in audio engineering and web development.
Recently, my team won the Global Fishackathon with our "PoachStopper" project. I and the rest of the people that I represent are really looking forward to meeting and collaborating with folks in using technology to improve conservation efforts.
Nigel Walker. I'm in Eugene OR, and it occurs to me that we can perhaps save the (baleen) whales by engineering their intestinal microflora.
given the ruminant derived fermentation tank they use for dealing with chitin, it should take only a handful of tweaks to their native bacteria to give them the capacity to digest the plastics we are force feeding them (PET for instance looks solved).
while such a strategy doesn’t (immediately) do a whole lot for the rest of the marine life we are killing with our trash, it seems to me like the only viable solution to removing micro plastics from the oceans is to give the filter feeders the ability to digest it.
I’m looking for smart folks who disagree, or are willing to take the idea and run with it.
the literature indicates we have many of the required pieces already, and I would posit that additional degradation pathways could be evolved with a little bit of directed effort (and some mutagens).
I’d even argue that Fukushima might have an upside when viewed from the right perspective.
what do you think?

We have a project of using plastic bottles to build water tanks in the area with water scarcity. if you want to get in touch please visit our website: www.naturerwanda.org
I joined the Digital Makerspace to accelerate the development of a new project focused on the global commercial shipping industry and how effective compliance measures can support curbing unwanted and illicit trade, trafficking and smuggling.
If you're all about databases, machine learning and/or building solid user interfaces I'm very interested in talking to you! Hit me up if you want to chat global transnational wildlife crime, the shark fin trade, IUU fishing or really anything else - there is nothing I don't enjoy learning about.

I love that there is a community of problem-solvers and collaborators out there. I hope to be involved, be educated, and be inspired.
I'm ready to do my best for raising the Marine and Land Conservation Awareness through your ideas and guiding within the sustainable development, and enhance the livlihood at the fisheries sector and poverty fighting.
I'm carrying out a lot of camera trapping for fauna monitoring and keep running into limitations of camera design for the species we are most concerned about (small cryptic mammals). Some potential uses for camera traps are also currently not feasible with the current tech available (eg monitoring nests of birds of prey from a distance of 50-100m, with no nearby power supply or internet connection). I'm investigating solutions to these problems and I'm also happy to contribute my expertise where needed.
Im Shafrizan from Sea Patriots Malaysia. We are marine techno conservationist movement formed purposedly to fight the ancient epidermic IUU Fishing by harnessing matured IoTs technology.

Katy here, currently an intern at Oceana. Graduated from the University of York with an MSc in Marine Environmental Management. Very interested in doing what I can in aquaculture, policy, fisheries management, and social science. Originally specialized in sharks and the fin trade, moving more towards combating the challenges of feeding the human population. Excited to be on here and to interact with you all! :)
I'm Antoine from Brussels, Belgium. I graduated one year ago from a Master in Management and I've been working in the startup environment since then (and more specifically in an accelerator/incubator/startup studio).
I've always been a big nature lover and after seeing various documentaries and mobies about it, I now want to be involved in the ocean conservation.
Eager to learn and with an entrepreneurial spirit, I'm looking for inspiration, make contacts with multi disciplinary people from here and ultimately build a company/startup that can help marine conservation and the environment in general.
Excited to meet and to learn from you all!
This is Courtney Cundiff from just outside of Seattle, Washington. That's Washington State. I'm currently a User Experience Designer working for Accenture, a large digital consulting firm, and I'm looking for some passion projects in the area of conservation.
I've always loved animals and have a new appreciation for wildlife conservation after taking my hunter safety course. I know not everyone agrees with hunting, but my main purpose is to be out in nature and if I'm successful, know exactly where my food came from.
I'm interested in applying my existing skillset and hopefully broadening it as well while being able to participate in projects.
Really excited to have found this platform and look forward to meeting and interacting with you all!
• conservation of the world's only oceanic island hummingbird, found in Chile (oikonos.org/juan-fernandez-firecrown/)
• building ceramic seabird nests for Californian and Hawaiian species (oikonos.org/seabird-nests/)
• sending albatross boluses to educators around the US to dissect and learn about ocean plastics (oikonos.org/wingedambassadors).
We are a small international collective of academics, researchers, resource managers, veterinarians, artists, and designers working towards interdisciplinary solutions to conservation challenges. We're looking for collaborations and partnerships in our priority regions, California, Hawai'i, and Chile. It's a genuine pleasure to connect with this network and identify people working in similar areas of focus. Mahalo nui loa,
My name is Jean Perardel.
Originally, I was an electronics engineer. But now I'm more specialized in prototyping IOT solutions.
I like to imagine and design solutions by hijacking sensors and sharing my skills on websites like MAKE:, Instructables, Hackaday....
My name is Tom Wye a serial entrepreneur my current company I founded is FishAngler which is a Sports Fishing platform accessible to users as a FREE mobile app called "FishAngler" available in the Apple & Android stores! The goal is to bring together Anglers from all over the world onto a single platform! We help anglers explore, catch and connect with others anglers! I am looking to add a conservation layer to the platform which may alerting anglers to MPA's, fish handling, etc.
I'm Ariel Kozlowski from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, I have economics & entrepreneurship backgrounds and most of my life I've worked as a impact-strategist management consultant for both not-for-profit and for-profit organizations.
I think it's interesting to share some of my experience working on the executive production, the research and the script writing of the 'Urban Bay' documentary, supported by UNDP and also on its launch event in the first UN Ocean Conference, June 2017 in New York City. Although I have been a lover of the sea all my life, it was only in the last three or four years that I have begun to understand the scale of the risk facing the ocean and its biodiversity due to the global changes caused by human activity. So, now my main focus is to work on developmentand management of projects that serves as part of the solution to the greatest environmental problem that our species has ever faced, I'm currently doing impact-film projects on environmental education, awareness and solutions, and also projects on biotechnologies solutions for environmental regeneration and social promotion, specially with sewage treatment. I believe that the aspect of combining emerging technologies with ecological issues have an enormous potential for proliferation of positive impacts on the Ocean and the future of life on Earth.
I have also proposed systems for the collection of spawned corals during the annual seasonal spawning events in Sabah. I have also worked in the establishment of the MPA Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area [SIMCA], off Sandakan- Beluran, Sabah, Malaysia. Coral reef restoration is a case of becoming a Sherlock Holmes...to investigate corals that originally grew at this sites being considered for restoration. Oftentimes, corals are transferred to sites that never grew there historically and have failed to survive.
My name is Sam Blakesley, and I am currently earning my MA in International Environmental Policy with a focus on Ocean and Coastal Resource Management from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. I have spent the last seven years volunteering closely with the Surfrider Foundation, a ocean conservation non-profit organization with a strong, volunteer lead activist network, as a way to complement and inform my studies during my undergrad schooling at UCSC and beyond. For Surfrider Foundation, in my hometown of Santa Cruz, California, I previously managed their largest and most consistent water quality monitoring and education program, the Blue Water Task Force. Santa Cruz was home to the #1 most bacterially polluted beach in the state, and thanks in part to the data our team collected, we were able to pinpoint the source, bring the right stakeholders to the table, and rid ourselves of that moniker. More recently, I acted as chairperson of the Santa Cruz chapter, and I look forward to returning to that work after my fellowship this summer in Rincon Del Mar, Colombia comes to an end.
The overarching goal of my work here in Rincon Del Mar is to provide the local community with economic incentives to restore and protect 450+ hectares of mangrove forest and create a database of carbon stock evidence to support the decision making processes for mangrove protection here, and eventually elsewhere. Based on FAO methodology for carbon estimation and monitoring and the data collected thus far, this project will help to analyze and secure international partnerships for Blue Carbon funding. Furthermore, this project will accelerate practical action at the local level to clean up and restore the mangrove, while helping to build awareness around the importance of mangrove protection and conservation for the future.
I truly believe that we are all products of our environment, whether we like it or not, and humans can not thrive in the long run at the expense of our environmental health. I look forward to learning from you all and honing my skills in analyzing and solving the global socio-economic environmental problems that our future undoubtedly holds.
Thank you!
My name is Nick and I am a marine biologist specialising on sea turtle research and conservation. I want to be able to quickly scan social media accounts to look for trade (legal and illegal) of sea turtles and their products - particularly from Madagascar and Mozambique, but I guess anywhere this shows up...
I am not a hacker and so would not know how to go about this.
Time is of the essence and unfortunately I can't wait to develop a large programme to go searching for photos, and I have tried the regular Google searches using sea turtles, trade, etc in the search lines but just get sent to pet shops in the US.
I wonder if anyone can help point me in the right direction of how I might be able to do some more refined searches that might prove more useful. I look forward to hearing from you, and thanks in advance!
Nick

My name is Matt Gargiulo and I just received my Master's Degree in Environmental Science and Management and Ecological Entrepreneurship. My thesis looked at how to best help Watershed Managers (think those in charge of keeping large lakes clean) improve their services and be more cost efficient. After talking to over 200 people, my partner and I learned the greatest way to help this industry is by creating a streamlined way to improve water quality management. Thus we are bluenote, an IoT company looking to help watershed managers identify, log, and analyze ideal water quality parameters. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Best,
Matt

Our philosophy - keep things wild and natural, build technological aids to help conserve and restore , use technological aids to understand and reduce our impact on the environment.
We want to keep our technology simple: simple to install, simple to operate and simple to make sense of.
Designed to blend in rather than stand out, built to be used by anybody, not just experts.

My name is Riley Donlin and I'm currently a student studying Mathematics and Science, Technology, and International Affairs with a concentration in Energy & the Environment.
I am seeking to start an initiative that uses technology to change the economic system of IUU fishing to make it easier to both conserve vulnerable marine populations and identify fisheries crime. I also would be happy to gain more coding and data analytics experience for anyone who needs assistance in those spheres.
I am still in the process of creating prototypes for a few devices and am joining this community to learn more about machine learning, sensor technology, and marine animal behavior so that I bring these projects to life.
Updates to come; I am very excited to be a part of this space!
Cheers,
Riley

My scientific training is in hydrology, surface and ground water. My passion for nature and conservation brought me to Galapagos, where I have been living and working for the last 15 years. Here we are faced with problems such as invasive species, ocean conservation, climate change and land planning. I am interested in sustainable finance mechanisms, impact and scaling of solutions. Galapagos is a conservation mecca, but a small place onto itself and a platform such as this offers huge scope for collaboration and innovation to tackle key issues. Currently I am working with members of the local community who are leading the fight against plastic contamination and cigarette waste. Two other key issues - (a) reducing the use of pesticides in the agricultural sector - are we facing similar insect population collapse and consequent impact on landbirds as Europe?; (b) large scale funding support for inter-disciplinary and international research network so a solution can be found for the highly invasive bot-fly Philornis dowsi which is greatly affecting local bird populations.
Sharing some of this and other Galapagos news on https://fb.me/glpshotspot

I'm Habib Sentongo from Uganda, I am a Computer Engineer and a passionate Software Developer focusing on Tech-Civilization-Nature Harmonious Co-existence. I participated in the 2018 Zoohackathon at UWEC Uganda and my team emerged victorious with our project called CheeTrack (https://conservationx.com/project/id/274/cheetrack ), a system for tracking Cheetahs in and out of Captivity.
I am here to learn, unlearn and help in anyway possible to conserve nature. I believe the world can be safer and happier, for every species.
My name is Brooke Tully, writing to you from the Mid-Hudson Valley area in New York (which got a lot of snow yesterday!) I'm an independent trainer and consultant, specializing in behavior change communication for conservation.
Within this work, I'm also interested in innovations in conservation - especially ones that explore new ways of engaging and interacting with audiences (ideally leading to changes in behaviors and social norms around conservation). As well as looking at ways environmental organizations can stay on top of changing consumer expectations that typically impact corporations but that we're now seeing consumers apply to all sectors.
More about me and the work I do can be found at my website: https://brooketully.com
Great to be connected to everyone!

My name is David Russell and I am a junior computer science undergrad from Clarkson University, in upstate New York, USA. Given that I don't have any prior experience working on conservation, I am open to pretty much any sort of application area. Most of my experience is technical and I have focused pretty heavily on computer vision; I've worked for a computer vision R&D company and am currently spending a semester doing vision research at Carnegie Mellon. Though I'm not quite as skilled in these areas, I am also interested in robotics, machine learning, natural language processing, and intelligent infrastructure. If you have a project you think I might be useful to, please don't hesitate to reach out to me.
All the best,

I am Nicolas and I am currently finishing my Master in organisms and environmental Biology in Belgium with a focus on conservation, genetics and spatial ecology. In a few days I will begin an internship in conservation genetics addressed to the lion conservation (specifically in the illegal wildlife trade). I have many many future projects in Conservation, especially its popularization and the use of new technologies to tackle such a challenge. I am pretty sure that innovation is the key to tackle problems such as species loss or poaching. I also believe that that this objective can only be the fruit of a collaborative work between a lot of people sharing the same interest and with very different background. That is the reason for my presence on this platform.
I am excited to interact with you all about many many subjects in order to learn more and maybe pave the way to a new conservation future!
Best,
Nicolas
I am Albin, and I work for the Zéphyr Solar's project.
We develops an aerial platform autonomous in energy. It is a tethered balloon inflated with helium. Also, it is covered with an envelope that has two main features: solar panel, to provide energy to any embedded system, and a wing, to maximize the aerodynamics performances. The balloon has an autonomy of weeks to months. It can lift up 5 kg and produce up to 500 W. It is easy to transport (small volume and light), and fast to deploy (less than 1h). It is ideal for tactic deployments in remote areas.
The balloon can be used in Wildlife monitoring, either as a mobile, silent and cost effective observation tower, either as an antenna for wildlife trackers. It can finally be used as an relay for radio communication, useful for remote expeditions !
We are currently looking for partners to try, test and feedback our first beta platform. Fell free to contact me :)
I'm Prithvi, the co-founder of Appiko, a venture with the mission of developing hardware tech for wildlife conservation. I founded Appiko after realizing that there is a lack of sustained seepage of cutting-edge technology into wildlife conservation, especially with developing products that can be bought off the shelf. We've started off with developing camera trap tech for filmmakers, forest officials and researchers. Right now we've passive (detect body heat) and active (detect break of IR beam) motion sensors, both of which are reliable, low-power and app-configurable. We're working on developing a camera trap dedicated to researchers and conservationists in a market dominated by camera traps for hunters.
All the tech that we develop is open source. We would love to collaborate. Looking forward to hearing from you.
My name is Raymond Timm. I recently started Siskowet Enterprises, a company aimed cleaning up plastics in the ocean. At some point, I figured that somebody had to do something to address this conservation emergency. Some estimates indicate that more than 100,000 marine mammals die every year in the North Pacific from eating, becoming entangled, or otherwise interacting with floating plastic debris. Untold millions (read that part more than once) of birds and fish are mistaking plastic for food with potentially lethal consequences. For some species of fish that readily switch sex during their lives, the potential population/ species implications of plastic-mediated endocrine disruption presents an unknown conservation risk. What's more, more than half of all marine turtles are thought to have plastic residing in their gut. Individually, these factoids are alarming. Collectively, they are implicated in an Ecological Conservation Emergency.
Our approach is to collect the plastic debris using a fleet of autonomous drone "sweeper boats" which then deliver the plastic to a larger ship where the plastic is converted to electricity through gassification technology that is then used to power the entire operation.
I was trained as a fluvial disturbance ecologist and have worked for 25 years in freshwater and wetland ecosystem restoration. This current endeavor is much more about business than science - at least in these early stages. Luckily there are lots of smart and experienced business people, engineers, and supportive friends that I can lean on.
I'm Marco Cestarolli, an architect and designer founder of OrtiKA - Design with and for [bio]diversity, a collective aiming at employing creative disciplines to reshape the relationship between humans and the ecosystem, by both actively promoting biodiversity and enhancing environmental conservation and also by promoting a "cultural sustainability" through the communicative power of arts.
We like to team up with diverse disciplines to radically redesign some of our cultural paradigms, everyday objects and even our built environment in a non-anthropocentric way.
We think the dichotomic relationship between humans and nature needs to be addressed both in its physical manifestation, by re-overlapping the spaces dedicated to us and to the wildlife, and also from a cultural point of view, adding a more profound element to the energetic sustainability.
Our approach is to combine effort between scientists or technicians and artists and creatives in order to maximize the impact of the intervention and make them resonate.
I'm glad to join this community and explore its networking potential!

I am also the co-founder of a project called Open Source Beehives using IoT tech to monitor honeybee health (www.osbeehives.com) and have been interested in combining tech with conservation for some time.
I was wondering if this "digital makerspace" is intended to be used by projects outside Conservation X -- like, could we also use it as a platform in the future? Collaboration over competition seems to be the vibe here, but would like to check that is that case?
Great initiative, look forward to seeing what comes out of this space and investigating it further. Heres to saving the planet!
Hello everyone, Tejas here. So I work as a firmware developer at Appiko co-founded by @PrithviRaj Narendra. We develop tech for wildlife conservationist and photographers. As of now Appiko has one active(IR beam based) and one passive(body heat movement based) motion detection sensor which you can trigger a camera or any other system. If you have any suggestions or need any embedded solutions feel free to contact me or @PrithviRaj Narendra(co-founder) or @Shubham Mohapatra (Hardware developer).
Hello everyone! I'm Lizzy, currently a management consultant in the Washington D.C. area, specializing in technology & digital strategy. Although I have a background in technology policy, strategy & international affairs, I'm a volunteer at the National Zoo as an educational interpreter (someone who engages the public on the different species at the Zoo & beyond). I'm deeply interested in wildlife conservation issues & passionate about creating conservation narratives for a spectrum of audiences. Hoping to write on these topics more frequently, as well as learn from everyone on here or meeting you virtually/in person!
Hey everyone,
I'm Taylor Sharpe, a project engineer for SweetSense Inc. and a lab manager in the Impact Initiative at CU Boulder. My background is in mechanical engineering and rapid prototyping, and we use a small set of desktop machines (3d printers, CNCs and laser cutters) to prototype sensors used to measure impacts of health and environmental interventions.
We have a strong community of International Development / Global Engineering folks here at CU Boulder, and our team's recent entry into this environment brings with it a focus on the use of CAD and CAM tools to rapidly produce sensor prototypes that can help improve human and environmental health. Our biggest focus at the moment is on using access to data to help mitigate climate change related drought conditions in East Africa and domestically.
I'm looking forward to finding some new opportunities for inspiration and collaboration here!
Hi, my name is Andreas Merk (Andy), i am a co-founder of Nature & Wildlife Association, a small international NGO specialized in Asian wild elephant conservation and with an innovative approach to Human Elephant Conflict. As most HEC is directly linked to food availability, we are now becoming a specialist in Alien Invasive Plants in our project areas.
Hi, my name is Peter Quilliam and I am the founder of Sea Crowd Technologies, a coastal data collection company that relies on scuba divers to collect data as they dive. I am developing a small device that will automatically collect scientific grade data that can be used by the scientific community. This device will also provide the diver with an amazing dive log function that can be sent directly to your smart phone and has some very cool features that you are able to share with friends. Also included in the device is a diver locator function if you get in trouble at the surface.
We are in the development phase of this project and look to have the first prototypes in the water by the end of 2019.
hi my name is Nani , im the co founder of NWA Nature& wildlife Association . We are working about protection and conservation of wild asian elephants especially about HEC human Elephant Conflict in all Asia . This work about wild asian elephants include lot odf different subjects .. And alien invasive plant species ,is one of them . In conservation people don t really talk about it , but its a must to work on it . Its the reason of so much damage and its link with environement ,wildlife ect .. So actually im focusing on it ..Here the link of our website if you want to know more about our work ..

Hello CXL Members,
My name is Mark Thompson and I'm a creative technologist, educator, and urban farmer. I grew up the son of an ornithologist, spending summers in cornfields and meadows assisting my father recording birds. Now an urbanite technologist and father of two, I'm deeply concerned about the future of our planet and feel compelled to serve in whatever capacity I can to advance the state of the art in conservation. I recently completed the ConsenSys Blockchain Developer Program and would like to apply my newly minted blockchain skills, along with my other creative technology skills, toward CXL's mission.
If you have a project that would benefit from the blockchain, please reach out. I'm also looking for collaborators on my own project concept - an augmented-reality digital collectibles app that teaches ecotourists about endangered species, and directs proceeds to conservation organizations on the front lines.
best regards,
mdt
Hi there, my name is Vikas Meka. I am biomedical engineer by training and spent much of my career in health care. In my recent role as Senior Innovation Advisor at USAID, I managed investments for new innovations that helped save lives of women and newborns in developing countries. Prior to that I worked in two biomedical engineering startups (one that I launched), health insurance, and management consulting.
I am looking at ways to reduce medical equipment graveyards. A number of medical devices are donated from US hospitals to developing countries, but they often end up being inappropriate or unused. Piles of medical devices just idle, in the hospital closets, hallways or out in the yard (imagine a x-ray machine with radio active material sitting in a hospital yard exposed to sun, rain etc.)
I am looking for others who want to collaborate on this project. Particularly, anyone who has experience with blockchain.
Hello,
I am Ross Patman, a software developer from the UK.
I specialise in mobile, web, and backend development, and want to use these skills in conservation.
The causes I care for most are rhino poaching, climate change, and plastic pollution, although I would happily get my hands dirty in anything I could make a positive impact in!
Hi everyone,
I am Diego, a Ecologist and PhD student at Yale University and the Max-Planck Yale Center for Biodiversity, Movement and Global Change.
I specialize in bio logging, spatial ecology, remote sensing and ecological forecasting using open source technology and tools. I am interested in exploring all these things across spatio-temporal scales. When I am not debugging code, you can find me in the Galapagos Island looking for giant tortoises.
Looking forward to learning from "the tribe"!
I am Caroline, veterinary doctor and Ph D doctor, I'm working for a local ONG: Société d'Ornithologie de Polynésie (SOP Manu), manu means bird in Maori language since 15 years. In this country, 20 on 40 endemic birds species are threatened by extinction and 2 birds are between the worst on the planet with only 36 & 79 adults remaining (but much less breeding pairs because those birds are island birds and have a very low breeding potential). In order to save them, I had to learn to fight against 10 worst invasive species of the planet: black rat; feral cat; introduced birds (3 species including red-vented bulbul, Common myna); miconia calvecens; African tulip tree....; pig; goats; and very recently I had to face 3 Little Fire ant colonies established on 70 ha at Tahiti monarch valley entrances. We are following some of these colonies since more than 4 years, with regular mapping and several attempts & methodologies, with the best specialists in the world from 4 countries. We found that fipronil gel (ultra diluted) is working very well in habitation (only 24 on 152 houses are still contaminated, but in the forest we were not very successful until we use a drone to spread two types of insecticide in one of the colonies (no more LFA more than one year after the last spreading). Today we are just lacking funds necessary to validate this method & it is very frustrating for us.
I will be happy to help the community with my experience.
Kind regards to all of you and congratulations: together we are changing the world.
I'm Andy Quitmeyer!
I am setting up a jungle laboratory for art, science, and technology (www.dinacon.org). Recently I was an interactive media and design professor at the national University of Singapore, where I taught prototyping and diy digital interactive design, and we had projects about animal interaction design, such as with the Singapore zoo and creating animal enrichment devices for things like red pandas, orangutans, sun bears, chameleons and more. I quit my tenure-track job though in December (along with about 9 other profs), because it became extremely focused on a handful of pointless metrics and I wanted to do something people or the natural world.
So we got a mortgage on a house next to the Smithsonian tropical research institute here in the soberania national Forest in Gamboa Panama. We are creating a facility to help scientists have agency over their own scientific tools, and be able to develop their own sensors and experimental prototypes that can be entirely driven by their own unique research questions and curiosities. We're also using it as a space to launch hybrid art science and technology residencies with long and short term housing and prototyping facilities including 3D printers, laser cutters, electronics stations, Mills and welding machines.

Hello everyone!
I'm Bastiaan den Braber. I have a 15 year background in management consulting across the world, 3 years as entrepreneur (and going) in tech startups, and most recently in venture capital as well.
I deploy the same skills, capabilities, and networks from my professional life towards zero poaching in Sub-Saharan Africa. My pilot project is called the 'Zambezi project', takes place in Zimbabwe and aims to build out the entire security and economic ecosystem for a green field game reserve of 34,000 hectares.
I'm very excited to join this community and to collaborate on making mine and others' project big successes!
Hi everyone!
My name's Tony. I am from the Gold Coast, Australia where I own and operate a digital consultancy building software and digital partnerships with Aus / US / China businesses. I have a background in biotech and economics and am passionate about all things conservation - particularly marine conservation! I have worked with startups for the past 6 years and venture capital and finance the past 3 years. I am interested in looking at scalable solutions for conservation in private enterprise - specifically looking at private sector business models contributing to conservation solutions or capital raising for eco-projects.
I surf, dive, fly and write music in my spare time. I'm stoked to have found this community of like-minded legends and look forward to meeting and collaborating with you guys! :)
Hi all!
I'm Rae Boccamazzo and I'm from the US. I've studied environmental impacts of ocean acidification as well as worked on a project involving marine phytoplankton. I got my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Washington and am interested in getting more involved in conservation research. I'm here to learn about all the possible avenues where my background might prove valuable.
I also just returned from a 10 month, international, solo travel experience where I was fortunate enough to visit Peru, Ecuador, Thailand, Indonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Japan, Italy, Spain, Germany, Poland, and Iceland. This trip bolstered my interest in global conservation efforts and I am excited to see what projects people from around the world are working on.
Hi guys, my name is Steven. I’m from Northern Ireland but living in Cologne, Germany. I mainly work in UX design, front-end development and marketing. Currently, I’m working remotely as CCO for a startup I co-founded called Yomo.
Recently I started a community for tech people who want to have a positive impact by helping prevent earth’s climate breaking down - https://techimpactmakers.com/

Hi, my name is Matyas. I'm from Hungary but currently living in Northern Sweden.
I work as a teacher, both face2face and distance, as well as a writer and journalist of articles on human rights issues. I am studying towards an MA in Online and Distance Education.
I would like to contribute to a project (or projects) that aim to tackle the issues of deforestation and/ or mass extinctions. I believe in the transformative power of Education and I am certain that the potential of Distance Education is yet to be fully understood. MOOCs, Citizen Science, M-learning and even adverertising as a means of educating are yet to be fully exploited in the fight against Global Change. I am looking for two things:
A) Like-minded developers, programmers and creatives who would like to team up with an Ed Tech 'expert' to join the fight.
AND / OR
B) An existing project I could join. This could be either a start-up, NGO etc. or a research project.
Hey everyone!
My name is Jasper and I'm from Atlanta, GA. I've always been interested in conservation but one internship after another, I find myself disillusioned with the best way to make a positive impact. My academic and work experience has led me here to conservationX - which is a much needed platform!
What I lack in general IT-competence and advanced coding skills I make up for in management skills, strategy, & political knowhow. In short...
1) What can I offer?
- Experience in the private sector-side of conservation work (both enterprise level and as a professional service), as well as an interdisciplinary background in qualitative economics, international affairs, global development, & environmental science
2) What would I be open to?
- Collaboration on a project or start-up that I think could be scaled to make an impact. General networking is great too - we all are of similar mind!
More than happy and open to get the ball rolling on any ideas you all might have! I'll be sure to share my own here as well now that I know about this fantastic resource :-)

Hi everyone! My name is Kevin, and I'm studying Sustainability Science at Columbia. It's a bit of a shift for me; I was previously working as an early-stage venture capitalist for 8+ years, but ultimately decided to focus on how I could help preserve and grow biodiversity. I believe technology will have a huge role to play in ensuring the world stays habitable for us and the living things that evolved alongside us, and I want to take everything I've learned to help. So, if you're ever interested in getting an investor perspective on what you're building, please reach out!
I also like making things (project site at ktfoundry.com), writing, and hanging out with my dog Chewie. You can find me on twitter @webbkevin.
Hey folks! I'm an aspiring young conservationist, photographer and leader. Age 16, I run a small field naturalists group in the Sydney area and have just been selected as Ambassador for the 2019 CoalitionWILD cohort. This means I'll be developing and running a conservation programme over the course of 9 months... and I've got some big ideas!!!!
In general, I strive to show others how humans are so closely linked to other animals and our environment, and in doing so to dispel some of the cognitive biases we humans build for ourselves surrounding our natural superiority over other lifeforms. “Reconnecting the family tree of life" is how I like to put it. Central to this is facilitating discussions and new conversations amongst the young and the old alike to spread a sense of connectedness within conservation circles and then extend this warm welcome to others beyond these communities to grow the network.
I'd love to get in touch with as many other passionate individuals on this site as possible, so please please get in touch!!!
Hi all,
My name is Alessio, I have an MSci in Biochemistry and I'm finishing a PhD in Developmental Biology at the University of Cambridge, UK. I'm interested in understanding how environmental challenges affect animal biology, how species respond to them, and whether we can evolve or engineer resilience at the species or ecosystem level. So far my support for conservation efforts has been hands-off, but I am keen to become more involved and learn how I can use my skills to make a more direct impact.
I'm looking forward to learning about all different aspects of conservation and joining some of the inspiring projects in here, particularly those with a strong data science component.
Happy to chat and collaborate - can't wait to get started!

Hello!
I'm Brendan Tougher and work for ProtectedSeas as a Program Manager for a project called Marine Monitor (M2). M2 is a software tool developed to work with land based radar systems for monitoring Marine Protected Area. We integrate the M2 software with off-the-shelf hardware as a low cost solution for resource managers, law enforcement, and communities to more effectively manage their near shore protected areas. The M2 platform is designed to operate autonomously in remote areas and data collected from the platform is available anywhere in the world via our web based user interface.
We started our project in 2015 and have deployed system in the US, Mexico, Palau, Indonesia, American Samoa, and the Philippines. As a small team we wear many hats and are always interested in collaborating with other conservation technologists to improve tools for marine conservation.
KiaOra Influencers, Developers, Conservationists par excellence!
Lovely to meet you all. My name is Dianne and I reside in New Zealand. I am a Lifestyle Medicine Board Certified physician but a passionate conservationist and have been involved with Sea Shepherd (SSCS) for many years as the founding organiser in New Zealand; and also the Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS) - noted for "the Cove" and "Racing Extinction" as well as other mainly marine conservation orgs). As a young teenager I was an activist for whale conservation and becoming a keen scuba /free diver this extended to the marine species and ecosystem. Enjoying many scuba and free dives with sharks has made me a rabid protector and vocal advocate against shark-finning and shark by-catch. As a doctor in Lifestyle Medicine a focus on human nutrition and sustainability based on evidence based principles naturally embraces both areas; and as a writer, lecturer and researcher my concern for IUU, by-catch and toxicity to both the environment and to human food consumption is one of my main interests.
After becoming wheelchair bound after an accident I devote my time to education, advocacy and ongoing promotion for sustainable practices and in doing everything I can to assist in the effort to curb the destruction of the oceans and marine life - and other wildlife. I organise seminars, conferences and have been involved with media/marketing and also promotions/fund-raising. I follow a plant-based dairy-free diet partly because of the tremendous evidence but also after becoming better educated in the impact and cruelty of animal production I could not longer equate being an animal lover to an animal flesh consumer. My husband, a medical researcher, also commenced a lifestyle medicine plant based programme and within 3 mths had reversed his type 2 diabetes, hypertension and several other health problems and stopped 6 medications. This approach to human nutrition has both the potential to save much marine life and reverse a number of degenerative human conditions and create a healthier and sustainable planet for future generations.
Currently, I am researching and writing an article for lay and medical professionals on the toxicity of farmed salmon and prawns - as a direct event with a friend who at 30 had to be resuscitated twice and developed severe complications including pericarditis from eating farmed salmon - so any feedback in this area is appreciated!
I look forward to interaction with such a diverse and fascinating group of people; to the exciting projects and future solutions to the major issues we currently are facing.
ps (Oh - I may not be an interpretive dancer - BUT at a recent conference gala night after being asked to dance by a colleague I have discovered the delights of "wheelchair dancing" !!! have taken up wheelchair boxing, and now just have to find a way back into ?wheelchair scuba?! or it's equivalent!) Thx

Hi, I'm Clare Fieseler. I had the pleasure of serving as a Conservation X Labs Fellow during the organization's first year. I'm now an Asst Teaching Professor at Georgetown University and joined the DMS to see how things have been progressing since I left.
Greetings all...
Not sure what I'll be able to contribute, but I'm a High School Biology/Biotech teacher. Been in the game for about 30 years. I have been fortunate to participate in 2 Research Experiences for Teachers opportunities. I worked on discovering binding mechanisms of malaria infected red blood cells on brain endothelial brain tissue at Seattle Biomed for 2 summers. I am excited to return to Fred Hutch for my second summer working on looking for novel targets to treat leukemia with immunotherapy.
I'm currently in the planning process of starting a Biotech Academy at the High School I work at. This will be a truly immersive Biotech academy with the Math, English and Social Studies classes designed to support the Science work being done. End goal is to have every student graduate with a published paper and a industry standard certificate. Students would also be doing a minimum 3 hour a day internship their entire senior year.
Currently looking for strategic partners in helping to build out the content/projects, provide equipment and/or financial support, and internship opportunities in the future. Projected launch date for the entire academy would be September 2021 with our first cohort of about twenty-four 9th graders entering into the program.
Paramount for us is the furthering of citizen science and developing the means to collect high quality data, even when non-scientists are doing that collecting.
With big problems, like global warming, it is my philosophy that we need to leverage technology, citizen scientists, and education because scientist and specialists cannot be everywhere at once.
Greetings everyone!
I have to say that the amount of diversity in this group is astounishing! I have been reading through some of the profiles and ideas here and they are all very interesting.
So I did my Bachelor on Environmental Engineering and I am curerntly doing my Masters on Sustainable Natural Resource Management (mainly focused on resources such as raw materials coming from the mining industry). Together with an excellent team, we have co-founded out own company "ExaMine" where we use satellite data to detect pollution from mining operations. The software has been a success and we are now going through accelerator and incubator programs to soon launch the software as a service (SaaS) to the market.
We have come accross this opportunity and would like to expand the services we can provide to foster conservation. Satellite imagery is a powerful tool which can be used as an initial step to detect different type of changes in the surface of the Earth. We would like to use the tools that we have already developed to detect and trace the development of illegal mining in the amazon jungle.
We would like to have more engament with people related to the social sciences and communication sciences to persuade politicians to take action of this illegal mining operations and prevent further deforestation of the amazon and pollution of the environment as well as community engament.
THIS IS AN AWESOME GROUP!!!! I just read down the list of people and how fantastic there's so much focus on developing new tools for conservation.
A bit about me- Sam, from New Zealand, Co-Founder for Environment & Conservation Technologies Ltd ('ECT' as we call it). We develop drones and robotic systems for controlling invasive species and protecting our biodiversity. We have used our drone technology on a few rodent eradication projects to save native species in NZ and a few locations around the world.
We have an awesome team of engineers who all have green hearts, big brains, and an addiction to 3D printing. I'm the scientist/project developer/coffee addict of the team.
We're looking forward to hopefully collaborating with you all :-)
As a Biologist, I've conducted ecological surveys in a range of terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats including tropical biodiversity. I find biomimetics fascinating, and at the Biology Form and Function Lab, I studied the structural qualities of dandelions to investigate sensors and contributed to finding a new method of flight never seen before in Nature!
Looking forward to hopefully meeting and working towards conservation solutions with you!

waste, its plastics and create 500+ jobs, save 1 million tons of waste plastic
waste, save over 1,000 acres of forest land and provide access to medicals
services to 10,000 slum dwellers in next three years
I am passionate about SDG 12-
responsible production and consumption (remember over 11 million tons of
plastic waste ends in oceans annually), SDG 13-Climate Change (I1.3 million
hectares destroyed in the last 50 years) and millions of Africans do not have
access to jobs and health services. Growing up in a slum community in Kampala,
I witnessed dire consequences of poor waste disposal with plastics clogging
sewers and the worst being when I contracted cholera during floods and had only
10% chances for survival. Sadly, I lost a mentor due to floods. Disappointed by
the wanton destruction of the Ugandan forests, which was leading to drought and
frequent blackouts (at less than 7% forest cover) currently and with the zeal
to make a difference, I passionately embarked on a journey to use my skills to
develop and employ innovative solutions in tackling the waste and environmental
the crisis facing Uganda. This was inspired by the German experience where their
waste industry employs 250,000+ individuals. I thus settled on accepting waste
plastics from slum dwellers as a form of financial resource for medical
services and recycling into fencing poles lumbers and building hardware that
substitutes expensive wooden timbers.
I am LARBE Agrobusiness Project's manager as agriculture is the future of my country and the whole African continent.
I'm a software development lead with some background in data science. I'm hoping to learn more about the specifics in the industries I want to help digitize, particularly, retail and health.
Happy to be part of this community.
Hey People!
My name is Julien, I am Co-Founder of a startup in Amsterdam with Forbes 500 clients. It is a software as a service tool.
When I was 17 years old, I wanted to do a gap year. I was doubting between two things. I wanted to be/support a park ranger in Africa, or I wanted to go to China to visit factories and start my own clothing brand (completely something else). I chose the latter.
This road has been really satisfying, I sold my clothing brand, became a ("famous") Dutch young entrepreneur, created a Network Group for Young entrepreneurs and held events, co-founded the company I am currently working at.
I did not go in the direction of option 1, but a passion of mine remains there.
Since I have my own company now, I have my responsibilities, including time. However, I can manage to spend (free of charge) 5-10 hours on a project/help regarding something else I like, namely (endangered) Wildlife Conservation.
Basically I want to find or support a project (and not just donations) with my expertise/network/skills/entrepreneurship.
I am looking forward to let that passion-fire burn!🔥
Julien
Hello everyone
My name Foday sesay, I am a sierra leonean by nationality, I lived in the northern province in a city called Makeni. I'm undergraduate student, i have gone through entrepreneurship skill training and need support to start up a business of my own. I'm so delighted and greatful to be a member of this platform.
Hey guys, I'm Sid from San Francisco/Singapore. I am a data scientist in the bay area who’s spent my career applying computational methods to problems that I care about. Systems I’ve built in production have analyzed pests in millions of fish using computer vision and underwater cameras, directed hundreds of thousands of messages from patients to doctors for One Medical’s telemedicine system, and classified and catalogued political opinions in news articles for hundreds of college kids for a startup I founded and got funding for in college. Currently, I’m working on making fish farming more sustainable at Aquabyte, the world's leading aquaculture AI company. Recently, I’ve been particularly interested in learning how to use data to enable vulnerable communities to adapt to climate change.
My name is Austin Greene and I am currently studying for my PhD at the University of Hawaii and the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB). To make a long story short, I am an ecologist by training and an amatuer engineer/maker by necessity. I currently study coral reefs, with an emphasis on ecological forecasting of coral diseases using a mix of satellite environmental metrics and in-situ coral health data (disease surveys plus sequencing of microbial samples). As most things on coral reefs happen slowly, I'm interested in developing inexpensive ways of capturing high-frequency, long-term time series data about the environmental and ecological conditions that impact coral reefs. You could scuba dive on a reef every day to collect those data, but I don't have the money for that, so instead I build and develop low-cost cameras. The most popular of these is CoralCam, which is a modified action camera I make that costs about $100 and captures photo or video (for example, 3 photos a day) for up to several months on the seafloor - CoralCam takes photos every day of my corals so I don't have to! I'm always looking to collaborate on new, low-cost and open-source instrumentation. I may not be a licensed electrical engineer but I have quite a bit of experience developing printed circuit boards for Arduino-based tools and field-testing instrumentation. As I'm often collecting lots of imagery of corals and coral reefs, I am very interested in learning about image analysis and neural networks so I can process my imagery more rapidly.
Instruments I'd love to collaborate and develop:
- A lot-cost, dedicated camera system with built-in machine learning to segment and track coral growth, identify and count fish, etc. Think of something the size of a point and shoot.
- An autonomous lagrangian buoy for collecting seawater samples and assessing plankton communities (including larvae) in real-time.
- Acoustically-linked, low-cost environmental sensor mesh networks for use on the seafloor.
Looking forward to collaborating with you all,
Austin
Hi,
Happy to join a new member in the conservation. I am an aquaculturist, and most of the work in the area of fish breeding and genetics. Currently doing some project in DNA barcoding for aquaculture and wild aquatic species in Sumatra, Indonesia...However there are still so many species have not been recorded, domesticated for aquaculture yet. Meanwhile, overexploitation of aquatic species and habitat destruction is going on. Therefore, i am interested to join the conservation, and hope can involve more in the program.
Best regards,
Syaifudin
Greetings, Everyone. I am a brand designer who transitioned to the field of UX design. Based in the US, I am on the quest to find an industry of passion. I am open to collaborations and discussion in the matters of conservation, sustainability, and social impact. Hi all, my name is Quentin and I've spent the last 10 years growing the professional ladder across different geographies, roles and industries.
I've reached a moment where I realize all this is superficial and I would like to have a real impact on the planet. I am a nature lover, spending my free time observing wildlife since my youngest years and I would not accept that we, humans, keep destroying it.
I believe it is my legacy to fight against extinction and Nature conservation and would love to collaborate with one of you on a project that makes the difference. I am sure my experience in entrepreneurship, tech and fast-paced start-ups could be useful ;)
If you want to know more about myself please ping me! Looking forward to meeting you all ;)
I patented a dewatering solution for the mining sector and a new mining/re-mining solutions based on the LIQUEFACTION effect. The great things about liquefaction are:
1) It always deliver a dry stackable material;
2) It can separate minerals from dirt/gangue using much less electricity/energy, so lower OPEX;
Now, these two solutions, dewatering and new mining/re-mining of tailing have a too big market potential, since all mining uses flotation/hydro-cyclones, so it gets wet and losses minerals in the tailing/underflow, these solutions base on liquefaction will be too much for just one company to develo.
So, we are looking for strategic partners to incorporate joint ventures for each of the potential markets.
Cheers,
Hi all, my name is Gerry. I've been working for three years with Friends of the Earth, England on a project called 10xGreener, helping residents in a London neighbourhoood make their streets better for nature and for people. The project was filmed by the BBC Natural History Unit and has received national media attention. We're looking at how best to connect city dwellers with nature (and, in so doing, with each other) in a way that builds optimum biodiversity and enhances human wellbeing. Interested in research, advice, potential funding sources, tech solutions, similar projects, learnings from elsewhere and knocking around ideas. Looking forward to linking up.
